Weekly Wrap-up

Sophie (9)
Language Arts: Sophie had a light school week this week. We read together from " Paddle-to-the-Sea" by Holling Clancy Holling.  She narrated what I read, and copied paragraphs from the book daily. We went over any grammar mistakes after copywork.
Math: We started the" Key to  Fractions" workbooks and Sophie really likes it! At a homeschool co-op  meeting last week someone was giving away these books, and I was planning on ordering them the next day! She has also continued using "Calculadders" for daily timed math drills.
Reading: Sophie has enjoyed reading and doing activities in Andrea J. Buchanan's "The Daring Book for Girls". She finished reading "The Bobbsey Twins" by Laura Lee Hope. Sophie has not been into silent reading lately. I need to find some good books for her.

Christian (14):
Science: For science every week we've been reading in Apologia General Science textbook. Christian and I take turns reading 1-3 paragraphs, then I have Christian tell back what we read. This week we studied module 10: Classifying Life and I did something a little differently.  I wrote on the white board some of the words we would encounter in the reading, then during his narration I have him use those words. It was a little difficult at first using all the words I wrote down, but I think it's helping him learn the material better. We did 3 experiments this week with bacteria, and yeast as a decomposer.

Reading-"The Magician's Nephew" by CS Lewis,  and "The Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien on CD

Christian continued the rest of his studies this week using Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra, Easy Grammar Plus, The Mystery of History Vol. 2, and Bible "The Life Change Series: Genesis

Together:
We started a Christmas devotional called "Tabitha's Travels: A Family Story for Advent" by Arnold Ytreeide. This has been fun because it's been a long time since the three of us have read a book together.  Christian and I take turns reading aloud first thing after breakfast.  I think I might continue with another book after we finish this one.

On Thursday our homeschool had a Christmas gift making day! The kids had fun making gifts with friends. Here are a couple pics:

  1. Hmmm, I have a 13 year old doing General science with Apologia as well. I like your ideas, and I think I will incorporate them - especially the narration as my boy is struggling a bit with retention.
