Our Day 11/16/11

Lately I've been asking the kids what they want to do first, and it seems to have made them happier to start the school day. Yesterday, Christian (11) wrote a report about Paramount Pictures, and  Sophie (6) started with crafts.

Today Christian started the day working on his latest passion, 3d computer animation and Sophie did stenciling and drawing.  I was doing my flylady routines, and making pancakes for breakfast when Isaiah (15) reminded me that I needed to bring him to his Algebra class.  It was the time we were supposed to be there!  I turned off the pancakes and we piled in the car to take him. When we got home I didn't bother starting school, but rather I let the kids continue what they had been working on because we needed to go out again soon to pick up Isaiah from class. It's been hard for me to remember when Isaiah's classes are because they are at different times on Mon, Wed., and Friday.

At 11:30 we picked up Isaiah and went to see the pediatrician about Isaiah's allergies, and to get Christian's glasses fixed. After we got home Sophie cruised through her math and phonics workbooks and Isaiah worked on his history homework for Monday's classes. Christian was supposed to be working on writing/grammar (IEW) but he kept talking about what he wants to do for his senior project , and what classes he wants to take for college! I could not get him to focus! I kept telling him that the writing he was doing and the math he was going to do would prepare him for college. He eventually did his writing and math but it took a lot of refocusing. Then Christian, Sophie and I read about ancient Egypt in Usborne Time Traveler.

Around 3:00 I ran to the grocery store to get a few things for dinner and tomorrow's lunch. Then I made pizza for dinner. Sophie played with math blocks, Christian worked on his computer animation, and Isaiah finished his schoolwork.  Then Charles and his girlfriend Jenna hung out for a while and we saw Andrew briefly between his college classes and visiting friends.

After dinner Sophie and Christian went to AWANA.  During that time, Isaiah, Fred and I watched Emma a movie for Isaiah's writting course Movies as Literature. We turned it off after the kids got home, then Christian practiced piano. My husband played with Sophie and Christian while Isaiah and I tidied up and did the dishes.  I read our Sonlight read-aloud, The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill and lastly, my husband tucked the younger kids in bed and I watched a show on Netflix.

Our Day 1/21/11

7:00-10:00 It was snowing when I woke up and my son Charles was already gone. He works for a landscaping and sealcoating company.  In the winter they plow and shovel.  So, whenever we get a snow storm Charles is gone shoveling. Sophie and I usually wake up at the same time. We spend some time snuggling and reading together. Sometimes I'll let her watch a video while I'll get ready for the day. Today she wanted a video.

When Christian woke up he wanted to get started on his schoolwork right away! Now, this isn't the norm, but on Fridays I can count on him getting school done early because I allow the kids to play video games on Fridays.  First he read today's reading in the Day by Day Kids Bible. Next he read a Chapter out of Dr. Seuss Young Author and Artist.  Both of these books he read aloud to Sophie and I, just because he prefers to read out loud and likes other people to enjoy what he's reading about. Sophie drew pictures with markers and cut paper while listening. After that Christian started Teaching Textbooks Math on the computer.

Since my other boys weren't up yet, I woke them at 8:30. We all had bagels for breakfast, then Andrew and Isaiah shoveled the stairs and walkway.  They also started and cleaned off the car for me. I left for a 1/2 hour Zumba Class at Curves. Isaiah played with Sophie while I was gone and Christian did pages from the workbooks Word Roots and Building Thinking Skills.  When I got home, Andrew was working on a song he's writing for a musical for a local theater Co.  Friday is the only week-day that Andrew doesn't have classes at the community college.

10:00-12:00
When I got home Christian told me that he only got one problem wrong in his math lesson. Then  I went over the workbook pages he had done with him. Next, I read a Chapter out of Skeletons in Your Closet: Discovering your Real Family Tree by Gary Parker to Sophie and Christian for science. After that, Christian did copywork from our evening read-aloud.  He cut out the copy work and glued it onto some colored paper, then he drew some illustrations under the copywork.  We also took a few minutes to go over our Character Quality Flashcards which have a question and picture on the front and a scripture verse on the back. Throughout the day Christian wrote in his journal.

I looked up some crock pot recipes online and then threw some ingredients into the crock pot to make BBQ Chicken for dinner tonight. It sure smelled good!  Isaiah  played an online Geography game , then he did his personal Bible Study. Andrew worked out and Sophie joined him downstairs. From what I can tell, she decided to cut more paper because I found cut paper all over the floor!  For lunch we had tostada's with refried beans.

12:00-3:00
After lunch Andrew and Isaiah cleaned up the kitchen and I did some laundry.  Christian played video games and Sophie wasn't happy because she wanted someone to play outside with her.  I told her she'd have to wait a half hour while Christian played video games. I let her choose between practicing writing her numbers in her wipe off marker book, phonics flashcards or reading. She chose to read Oh the Thinks you can Think! by Dr. Seuss to me. Then Sophie and Christian played outside in the snow for a while. Isaiah worked on his writing homework for his weekly writing class. Then he did a science experiment from his Physical Science textbook.  Andrew went to the library, then to work at Sports Authority for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

3:00-5:30-
Charles came home from work and rested for a while. After sweeping the floors, he went to his girlfriends house for a couple hours.  Charles is in his last year of homeschooling, but he does it around his work schedule.  Sophie and I made peanut butter cookies then Sophie went off to play. Christian spent the afternoon building with Legos and playing more video games. Isaiah did some history homework then he played some video games, too. I tried to get some reading and relaxation in for myself, but soon Sophie was back and talked me into reading a storybook to her called Kingdom Parables by Christopher A. Lane. Then I made rice to go with dinner and she went to play Legos with Christian.

5:30-bedtime
After dinner, we spent the rest of the evening watching a history channel show then a science show with Daddy.  The younger kids  played with Legos again before bed. I cleaned up the kitchen and did some more laundry. I read to Isaiah a chapter from a book about Amy Carmichael, a missionary to India. Then I got to do some reading for myself!

Some Pics From Our Day

Christian has been getting out his Skippy Jon Jones books again.  This morning he made props and backgrounds. He and Sophie had fun putting on a Skippy Jon Jones puppet show!

I managed to get a picture of the older boys before they headed out for the day. After breakfast, Charles left for his homeschool co-op classes and Andrew had college classes.

After her schoolwork was done, Sophie got out the marbleworks.

Our Day 11/1/10

7:00-10:00 I woke up at 7:00 today and everyone was either already up, or waking up.  Isaiah needed to finish his homework for his writing class today, and Andrew had a college assignment to work on.  While they were working, I snuggled on the couch with Sophie and Christian played with our cats (he loves cats!).

Everyone made their own breakfast, then got ready for the day.  I had to fill out some paperwork that I've been putting off.  While I did that, my husband did some water color painting with Sophie.  I enjoyed sitting next to them listening to them chat and paint together.  Christian wrote a short story with an old computer CD he found recently called Storybook Weaver.

Then Sophie and Christian went off to play for a while, I looked at a couple blogs and checked my e-mail. Then I  did the dishes, and cleaned up the dining room and  living room.  I've had to get used to the fact that my older sons aren't able to help me very much with the cleaning like they used because of their busy schedules. We had a teen party here last night, but the clean-up wasn't bad at all really.

10:00-1:00 Andrew dropped Isaiah off at his writing class, then went to the college to work on a project with a few other students.  I made homemade bread and  peanut butter cookies.  Sophie did her phonics and math workbooks at the island while I was baking. Christian did his math on the computer, then did his critical thinking workbook.  We had lunch, then Christian and Sophie colored while I got ready for world history class.

Mondays are a different day for us because Isaiah has writing class in the morning, then I teach world history/geography class to Isaiah and his friend here in the afternoon. Charles is usually here on Mondays, but he's been in California on vacation with his girlfriend's family for 2 weeks (lucky him!).  Charles is a senior and works 3 days a week and does his homeschooling on 2 days (plus nights and week-ends if needed). I don't do any extras with Sophie and Christian on Mondays.

1:00-4:00 Andrew picked up Isaiah and his friend kyle.  The boys ate when they get here and hung out for a little while. During class time we read and discussed a chapter from Streams of Civilization then they answered some questions.  For the rest of the class the boys did geography research.  Sophie and Christian played outside for while, they came back in soon after to play inside because it was so cold!  Andrew did  more homework then taught a guitar lesson.

4:00-7:00 Christian came down with a fever and a stomach ache, so he rested on the couch. I did Sophie's reading lesson with her, then Sophie had a turn on Storybook Weaver.  After a while, Sophie hung out with Daddy while I went to the library by myself -very unusual. After Andrew gave another guitar lesson, he dropped Isaiah off at youth group, then he headed to his writer's group. We had Mac & cheese w/ham for dinner.

7:00-Bedtime Thankfully, Christian was feeling much better so my husband and I played go fish with him and Sophie. It was a fun time! It's so cute the way Sophie and Christian pretend to real in a fish when they have to draw from the pile. The younger kids went to bed early and easily tonight. Youth group went late tonight because they are working on a Christmas play.  Andrew picked up Isaiah after his writers group. What a blessings to have older teens who drive who don't mind picking up (and dropping off) their younger siblings!

It was a good day! Before bed I read The Gift of an Ordinary day: A Mother's Memoir by Katrina Kenison.

Pics from our homeschooling day

Here are some pics from our day:
These are the Character cards that we use, they have a question on the front and a Bible verse answer on the back. I went over these with the kids after prayer time. Then and Sophie and Christian colored and drew picutes while Isaiah and I took turns reading a chapter from the book of John.

Andrew was so nice and painted with Sophie! Sophie drew a picture of a large heart in one of her paintings and said it was God giving a kiss to all the people in the world! :) Christian decided to paint while I was reading to him.

Isaiah is working on Easy Grammar Plus and Charles is doing his online Spanish course. After that Isaiah worked on math and Charles left for his orthodontist app, then to his friend's house to do an Algebra 2 lesson.

After Sophie's bath, I braided her hair. Isn't she the cutest?
Sophie and I playing a Discovery Toy's Phonics game
The boys played a lot of music today.

Christian showing off his Lego creation.

Here I am finally getting my lunch at 2:30. I'm asking Isaiah questions about the history chapter he read. After that he typed a summary of the chapter.
Sophie played with math blocks while I worked with Isaiah.
Isaiah practicing drums-he did that a few times today!

Christian using the computer.
Reading The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman (good book!) to Christian as part of his Total Language Plus.

Christian is doing Comprehension questions from The Whipping Boy First we do the questions orally and I write down his answers, then he copies them into his Total Language Plus workbook. Sophie is using her wipe off letters book.
Andrew giving Isaiah a guitar lesson
Reading the Preschooler's Bible to Sophie. I talked to her today about maybe reading The Little House on the Prarie series to her (I already read Little house in the Big Woods to her and Christian). I read the entire series to Andrew and Charles when they were ages 5 and 3. I've been wondering if I should read the series to her now or wait till she's older.

Charles doing Building Thinking Skills: Level 3 Figural by The Critical Thinking Co. I've used workbooks by this company on and off throughout the years. I've heard they help with testing.

Playing a Greek and Latin roots game with Isaiah called Rummy Roots.

Sophie and Christian playing Jenga

The boys being helpful and cleaning up after dinner. Then we watched Life on the Discovery channel.

Some pics from our homeschool day

In the afternoon we went to Charles' Basketball game

In the evening Isaiah and I went to see the play Anne, Jr. Andrew was the music director for this play. I was planning to bring the younger kids to see it, but the roads were so icy, so they stayed home with Daddy instead. It was a great show!
